What is a Solar Inverter?
Solar inverters convert the variable direct current (DC) output of a PV system into usable alternating current (AC) electricity. Without solar inverters, the sun’s energy could not be properly transferred to the utility grid, be stored in batteries, or be used to power a home or business’ electric system.

When setup with solar power optimizers, each module has its own little “brain”, so if one module goes out, it routes the power around it allowing the system to still run and produce energy. What are Solar Power Optimizers?
Power optimizers work with solar inverters to increase overall system efficiency and provide real-time performance feedback for each panel. Optimizers plug directly into the solar panel and increase the conversion rate and efficiency for DC to DC energy (before the energy is sent to the inverter for DC to AC conversion). Essentially, optimizers help your system produce more usable energy than it otherwise could. This often results in a quicker payoff period for your system overall.
String Inverters & Micro Inverters?
String inverters are not very efficient and really only useful in large industrial-scale projects. Their biggest downfall is that they’re a lot like the old Christmas tree lights. If one panel goes out, your entire system will stop running. Micro inverters solve the Christmas tree problem by plugging into each individual panel, but they’re a much steeper cost and don’t come with free monitoring services – you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. This is a huge deal for incentives, cash rebates, and utility programs, because they often require the monitoring information to get your money.
