Texas Solar Tax Credits, Rebates, & Net Metering!

Texas Solar Incentives, Rebates, & Tax Credits

There’s no statewide Texas solar tax credit. However, there are many city-based and utility-based solar incentives that can apply to some Texan solar power systems.

For example, Austin Energy offers residents of Austin a solar rebate up to $2,500. Austin residents are also eligible for Austin Energy’s Value of Solar Tariff, which pays $0.097 for every kilowatt-hour generated by your solar panels.

Austin Energy customers can earn money by completing a solar education course and installing a qualifying solar system on your home. The power company also has options for renters to benefit through a community solar program.

If you’re a CPS Energy customer, you may be eligible to receive up to $1.20 per Watt of solar panels that you install on your roof. There are also opportunities for solar rebates through Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative, Garland Power and Light, and City of Sunset Valley

Texas Solar Laws

In addition to local Texas solar rebates, there are a couple important Texas solar laws that lowers the cost of installing solar in Texas. All these incentives are a major reason why there has already been over 7,784 megawatts (MW) of solar energy installed in Texas.

Texas Solar Tax Benefits

Even though the state of Texas doesn’t offer solar tax credits or sales tax exemption, there are a couple important tax benefits to installing solar in Texas

Texas Net Metering

Just like with Texas solar tax credits, there is no statewide net metering program currently in Texas. However, there are many Texas utility companies that offer a credit to solar panel system owners for each unit of energy their panels produce.

Some TX utilities with net meter policies include CPS EnergyEl Paso Electric, the City of Brenham, and Green Mountain Energy

Renewable Energy Property Tax Exemption

This benefit ensures that any new solar energy system installed in Texas is exempt from being part of your property tax assessment value – forever. Even though your home value may increase when you add solar, you won’t be paying for it in taxes. Obviously, this helps you to recoup the cost of your system even quicker.

Texas Solar Rights Law

Texas has a statewide solar rights law that prevents Homeowner Owner’s Associations (HOA) from blocking your home solar panel installation.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

The Federal Solar Tax Credit is 26 percent for construction started before until Dec. 31, 2022.
Similar to other solar tax credits, with the ITC you can deduct 26% of the cost of your solar energy system from your federal taxes.
In 2023, the solar ITC drops to 22%.
