Texas Solar Incentives, Rebates, & Tax Credits

For example, Austin Energy offers residents of Austin a solar rebate up to $2,500. Austin residents are also eligible for Austin Energy’s Value of Solar Tariff, which pays you $0.097 for every kilowatt-hour generated by your solar panels. If you’re a CPS Energy customer, you’re eligible to receive up to $1.20 per Watt of solar panels that you install on your roof. Texas Solar Laws

In addition to local Texas solar rebates, there are also a couple important Texas solar laws that make the cost of installing solar in Texas much less. All these incentives are a major reason why there has already been over 4,606 megawatts (MW) of solar energy installed in Texas.

Texas Solar Tax Benefits

Even though the State of Texas doesn’t directly offer solar tax credits or sales tax exemption, there are a couple important tax benefits that installing solar in Texas will get you.

Texas Net Metering

Just like with Texas solar tax credits, there is no statewide net metering program currently in Texas. However, there are many Texas utility companies that offer a credit to solar panel system owners for each unit of energy their panels produce. You earn these credits when your panels produce more energy than you end up using. If you ever find you need more energy than your panels are producing, you can use those credits instead of paying the utility company. Some utilities with net metering policies include CPS EnergyEl Paso Electric, the City of Brenham, and Green Mountain Energy

Renewable Energy Property Tax Exemption

This benefit ensures that any new solar energy system installed in Texas is exempt from being part of your property tax assessment value – forever. Even though your home value will surely increase when you add solar, you won’t be paying for it in taxes. Obviously, this helps you to recoup the cost of your system even quicker.

Texas Solar Rights Law

Texas has a statewide solar rights law that prevents Homeowner Owner’s Associations (HOA) from blocking your home solar panel installation.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

2020 is the last year the Federal Solar Tax Credit will be at 26 percent! After that it goes down significantly each year. The ITC allows you to deduct 26% of the cost of your solar energy system from your federal taxes.
