The state of South Carolina offers a number of appealing incentives to residents that install a solar panel system. One of the best incentives for going solar in South Carolina is the 25% state tax credit for the total cost of solar energy system installation. These terrific incentives are a major reason why there has already been over 1,265 megawatts (MW) of solar energy installed in South Carolina.
When you go solar in South Carolina, you can essentially cut your cost by a quarter when you take advantage of the 25% solar tax credit. Even better, unlike other states, you can carry the value of the tax credit over 10 years of filing, just to ensure you get it all back regardless of how much you pay in annual taxes.
If you’re a customer of Duke Energy in South Carolina, you can take advantage of a $1.00 rebate for every Watt of solar you install for your home or business. That will add up quickly and result in some serious solar savings. Say you get a 7kW solar panel system for your home. That’s an instant $7,000 discount on your system!
Similar to the Duke Energy rebate in SC, customers of Santee Cooper can get $1.30 back per watt of solar energy installed. However, this rebate caps at $5,200.
Many utility companies in South Carolina also offer Net metering which allows you to earn credits on your electric bill on days when your system produces more energy than you use. You can then use those credits on days when your system produces less than what you need (can happen in wintertime some). Duke Energy and Dominion Energy are two utility companies in South Carolina that offer net metering for solar energy.
