Renewable Energy Tax Credits, Rebates, & Net Metering!

IOWA Solar Incentives, Rebates, & Tax Credits

For those who qualify, the state of Iowa offers a simple and enticing solar tax credit to those who install a solar panel system for their home or business. While available, Iowa offers 13% of your total solar system cost back on state income tax.

There’s a $5,000 maximum credit amount for residential installs and a $20,000 cap for businesses.

This solar tax credit and other Iowa solar incentives explain why there’s almost 300 megawatts (MW) of solar energy installed in Iowa.

Iowa Solar Laws

In addition to tax credits, there are also a couple important Iowa solar laws that can reduce solar costs and protect your right to install solar. The state tax credit is first-come-first-serve and has a limited pool of funds.

Iowa Solar Tax Benefits

In addition to the 13% Iowa residential solar tax credit, there are more benefits you can take advantage of when you install solar in Iowa.

Iowa Net Metering

If you’re a customer of MidAmerican Energy or Interstate Power and Light (IPL), you may be able to take advantage of net metering with a new residential solar system. Net metering allows you to earn credits on your electric bill on days when your system produces more energy than you use. Use those credits on days when your system produces less than what you need (can happen in wintertime some).

Renewable Energy Property Tax Exemption

The Renewable Energy Property Tax Exemption ensures that any new solar energy system installed in Iowa is exempt from being part of your property tax assessment value for the first five years.

Iowa Solar Easement Laws

Iowa solar easement laws help ensure your Iowa solar installation isn’t covered by shade that would limit the production of your system. There are also many cities and towns in Iowa that have laws preventing home owner associations (HOA) from blocking your home solar panel installation.

Iowa Sales Tax Exemption

Save money with the sales tax exemption on the cost of your Iowa solar energy system!  This cuts 6% on the total cost of your system.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

The Federal Solar Tax Credit is 26 percent for construction started before until Dec. 31, 2022.

Similar to other solar tax credits, with the ITC you can deduct 26% of the cost of your solar energy system from your federal taxes.

In 2023, the solar ITC drops to 22%.
