Renewable Energy Tax Credits, Rebates, & Net Metering!

Colorado Solar Incentives, Rebates, & Tax Credits

Colorado is one of the best states to install solar in due to the many money-saving rebates and incentives available. In Colorado, you’re rewarded for installing solar in a number of ways and you won’t pay taxes on a new system. There has already been over 1,708 megawatts (MW) of solar energy installed in Colorado.

Colorado Solar Rebates & Tax Breaks

If you install solar in Colorado, check for solar rebate programs that your utility company may offer. You won’t pay sales or property tax on your new solar system.

Colorado Incentives for Solar

But wait, there are even more reasons for going solar in Colorado. Net metering, community solar, and the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) reduce the cost of going solar in Colorado.

Colorado Rebates

Some Colorado utility companies may offer cash rebates for residential solar installations. For example, EnergySmart Colorado offers $400 – $3,000 rebates depending on where you live. Colorado Spring Utilities offers an installation rebate of $0.10 per watt. Xcel Energy offers rewards for small, medium, and large solar installs. Black Hills Energy has net metering and a production-based incentive.

Colorado Net Metering

Colorado’s net metering policy allows you to get credit for the extra electricity your system produces. The state-wide policy applies to all utilities and includes municipal utilities with more than 5,000 customers. The law was updated in 2018 to include solar battery systems.
Use the credit on days when your system doesn’t generate enough power. It’s a way to zero-out any energy costs, reduce your bill, and make the most out of your system.

Colorado Sales Tax Exemption for Solar

The Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Equipment ensures that you don’t have to pay a cent in sales tax for your new solar energy system.

Colorado Community Solar

Colorado is one of the first states to actively support community solar projects. If you rent or if your home doesn’t have a suitable roof for solar panels, you can still potentially get solar energy through an off-site community solar array.

Colorado Property Tax Exemption for Solar

The Property Tax Exemption for Residential Renewable Energy Equipment ensures that your new solar system isn’t included in property tax assessments. So, even though your home value will certainly increase after solar installation, you won’t have to pay for it in taxes.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

The Federal Solar Tax Credit is 26 percent for projects that start construction before Dec. 31, 2022.
For US residents, the ITC allows you to deduct 26% of the cost of your solar energy system from your federal taxes.
In 2023, the ITC goes down to 22%.
